I think this blog is something that will never be resolved as there is always someone who is going to have an opinion that differs. Personally in my designs I use both two and three columns in my designs as it all depends on the project, what the client has in terms of content and requirements so this is all on a need basis I think. Surely you don’t need to restrict yourself to one or the other, you can use both.

i feel that a 3 column layout allows a little more customization of where you can place certain items that help visitors find what they need.

Two columns and three columns have similar function, but it depends on the user on which they prefer to use.

Three column layouts are especially nice if you can assign a purpose to the columns.
