Great post. Opened my eyes up a ton. I now hate my blog layout because I'm more concious of whats actually going on with the design. I guess thats a good thing after all, admiting there is a problem is the first step to make progress. Whitespace rocks!

Shine - I love the comparison. I hadn't properly thought of that before, although I'm definitely coming round to seeing the advantages of organization and minimalism in life, as well as in design.

Michael - Seems that it's working then! :D

Mason - Where were you yesterday?? I could have done with a few of those words!

milo - Glad you're enjoying it! There's another 3 days to go. Hope your opinion will still be as high by the end of it. ;) (And we might be getting that soon. It's a toss up between that or threaded comments.)

Prominence, priority, preference, precedence; all those p-words mean the same thing:

If it's important, make it stand out! This is a critical aspect of both usability and striking design.

Great post Michael, thanks.

Short, sweet, and to the point, Michael. Looking at your own design, I'd say you are deliberately giving prominence to your RSS icon because subscriptions are an important goal for you.

Can't agree more Michael. Setting goal so as to have a direction on the design, to know what to emphasize and what to fade into the background. Somehow the lessons learnt from how to make a blog work shares a lot similiarity to that of making a life work!

Thanks for the tip!
