Ideas for Flash in Blog Design (& a Competition)

f9

Flash isn’t something you often see in use on a blog (aside from the WP-Cumulus tag cloud plugin). The majority of our animations and other effects tend to be done with JavaScript.

When Trenty Fox of Flashmint.com got in touch with me a few days offering to give away some of their products in a competition (Which we are doing at the end of this post!), my initial reaction was that Flash wasn’t a big thing for bloggers though.

What changed my mind was when I rolled over the Christmas logo on their site (Not going to tell you what happens, just go try it out, it’s cool!). It’s a small touch, but it made a big difference for me.

With this post, I’m going to fire out some other ideas for how using Flash in small doses could add to your blog. Let me know what you think, or where you use it!

It’s been a while since we last asked for some feedback about who you are and what you think of the site. If you could spare two minutes to answer the polls below, it would really help us make Pro Blog Design even better!

There is also a reward for anyone answering the question at the end! Absar from ShopHTML is offering 20% off their PSD to HTML services to anyone who does!

New Design for Our 2nd Birthday

redesign3

Two years ago today I published the first post on this blog, a short discussion on making a good first impression (Something I’d obviously been thinking a fair bit about for starting my first blog!)

Now 2 years, 7000 subscribers, 188 posts, and 5 and a half thousand comments later, here we are. This is design number 3, and I’d love to hear what you think!

I owe a big thank you to everyone who has left a comment here, emailed me, subscribed or interacted with the site in anyway. It’s been a great 2 years, and I’m looking forward to many more!

We have a competition sponsored by Bizcard at the end of the post where we’re giving away 2500 business cards.

5 Ways to Promote Your Blog with Print (And 100,000 Biz Cards Giveaway!)

print-intro-1

We talk a lot about designing on the web here (obviously!), but rarely mention designing for printed materials.

As bloggers, the majority of our promotion is online. Our readers are online of course, so that makes sense, but it’s also because online is what we know.

We know how to use Twitter, we know which Facebook groups to join, which forums are active, and what blogs to guest post on. That form of marketing is second nature to us, but print is a whole different world.

Would you be surprised to know that it can cost less than $70 to print off 1000 flyers though? And who here would say no to 1000 new readers?
