Poverty in Pictures

Today is Blog Action Day 2008. Thousands of blogs and websites across the internet will be publishing articles and running competitions in the name of fighting world poverty.
There are far better writers than me out there who will write better posts than I could.
But this is a design blog. And design talks.
Have a look at the images below, and try putting in the face of your children, or your brother, or your auntie, or anyone else you know. I think they'll talk to you too.
(Click on any of the images to see a larger version)
How do you feel now? Perhaps we should do something about it?

Wow those a good collection of heart striking pictures. I feel really bad cause I was gonna sign up for blog action day and it came up faster then I thought, I guess I'll have to wait tell next year.
Good job on doing something different instead of writing you decided to show us.

My heart aches when I see those pictures

Amazing photos that absolutely speak to me. All of them pull at your heartstrings, but especially the ones of children.
I considered joining Blog Action Day this year, but truthfully didn't think I could write something good enough for the cause. They say "a picture is worth 1,000 words" right? You did great with your post!

Jeremy,
It did come up so quickly, but we can be sure it will be back again next year. You'll be able to join in then!
Pelf,
I know the feeling.
Selene,
It's the images of the children suffering that gets me the most as well.
I know what you mean about not being able to write. I wanted to take part for months, but I only officially joined 2 days ago, when I had done this. Before then, I wasn't sure what I'd be able to say, and in the end, the pictures said it for me.

Michael,
Thanks for your post - the pictures really do say it all. It's hard to take the ones of the children.
I simply focused on a cause that I support. And then came to your article from Selene's.

Further proof that a picture is worth a thousand words - thanks for sharing.

Kim,

I agree. It's the photos of children that have the biggest effect on me. An adult is more capable of dealing with what life throws at them, but a child? No child should have to go through anything like this (No adult should either, but it's just so much worse seeing it in a child, especially compared to the sort of carefree, happy life i led as a child...
George,
Well said, I think it definitely is.
Diseno,
I know what you mean. It's not the image I normally conjure up when i think of a child at the beach...
Edward,
You can. We all can do something. Every little thing we can do can make things that little bit better. Just have to keep hope!

Goldfries,
Of course! That was a very moving picture. I've added it to the post now. Thanks for sharing it.
(But lol - You were right about the spam bin. At least your first comment managed to avoid it this time!
)

Thanks Michael.
After being caught in the spam box for a few times, I learn that the best way is still to notify you before or after i posted a comment with link.
Anyway, a brief information about the photo - I was on my way to a gathering of moderators for our local forum and i saw that scene a stone's throw away from the restaurant, and I thought that scene was one I must take!

Goldfries,
It's amazing the stark contrast between the scene in the photo and the restaurant you say was right next to it. So close to each other, but worlds apart.
Thanks for sharing it here.

Sickening pictures - I see a few of them myself regularly here in India. But it really goes to show that there will always be sufferers, and also luxurious overspenders.
I plan to donate a month's worth of earnings from my website to some good cause - just can't decide on which one. If anyone's got some good suggestion, mail me.
